NEW Horror for victim of sex assault
A report by Ellen O'Reilly
A sexual assault victim has received death threats after giving evidence which resulted in her attacker being jailed for seven years, it emerged yesterday. The woman from Kerry has been the victim a second timer as she endures a hate campaign and criminal damage since bouncer Danny Foley was convicted of her assault. She has received telephone calls where the caller told her they will ' pay her back' and have 'bought coffins' for her and her son. Her front door has also been kicked in recent in recently. Gardai are investigating. On other occasions, the side door has been kicked and her ground floor windows banged upon. It has been made clear to her that son's life was 'in her hands' and that this was all 'because of what she did to Danny Foley'. The local council now plans to put up lights in the mother's back garden and a lock on the side door passage at her home.
Foley, 35, was jailed for seven years in December for the sexual assault of the 23-year old woman behind a Listowel nightclub in 2008. During his trial, 50 supporters queued up to shake hands as he stood in the dock. The Listowel parish priest, Fr. Sean Sheehy, was forced to stand down after he provided Foley with a character reference and went on radio following Foley's sentencing and spoke the 'alleged assault'. After the trial the woman said that the whole experience was 'terrible'. But she encouraged other victims to report assaults and said there was support out there for people who had been attacked in this way.
'When you say"no" , no is no and whoever won't take "no" for an answer, they are taking advantage, she said at the time'. Ther is no sugestion Foley or his family are aware of the threats and intimidation taking place, or even support the campaign against the woman.

Council calls special meeting on Kells antisocial behaviour
by Ann Casey

Cllr Brian Curran.
Residents of a number of Kells estates who have endured countless incidents of antisocial behaviour in recent months have been invited to attend a special meeting of Kells Town Council on Friday evening to discuss the problems in the area.Following a number of further incidents in the Magdalene Court and lower Maudlin Street area over the past week, Kells Town Council cathaoirleach, Cllr Brian Curran, has called a special meeting of the council to which representatives from Magdalene Court, Archdeaconary Glebe and other estates have been invited to attend, along with the Gardai.A meeting for residents of the area took place on Monday night at which people living there spoke of the problems with antisocial behaviour over several months. The most recent incident in the area occurred last Thursday night, when a man produced a knife following earlier incidents in the Magdalene Court estate.According to Garda,i the man had over-reacted to an incident in which youths were causing aggravation in the area.Gardai had to use pepper spray before the man was arrested and he is due to appear in court in Kells next month in connection with the incident.According to Cllr Curran, residents in the area are being intimidated by a gang of youths and incidents in recent weeks have included setting fire to an electricity pole. He said that not all of the youths were from the area and most young people from the locality were not involved in the intimidation.Cllr Curran said people were frightened by the recent events and huge resources were being wasted each week by the fire service and Gardai who have to respond to these incidents.

Trams: Blood on the tracks
Crime forces Luas to hire security men
by Joanne O'Connor
Rising attacks and threats on the Luas have forced management to hire a specialised security company.
Drivers and inspectors have received threats in the past 18 months. Figures show 475 incidents have taken
place on the capital's two line tram system since the beginning of the year, compared with 860 incidents in 2008.
Veolia transport, the operator of Dublin 's light rail network, has said were 31 thefts reported in the first six
months of 2009, forcing the company to introduce full-time security aboard its Red line trams between Tallaght
and Connolly, on which much anti-social behaviour has occurred.
Since the beginning of this year alone, 74 threats to staff and members -including drivers and ticket
inspectors- have been reported by the firm, and as the volume of betty crime grows, gardai have been asked
to travel on trams to monitor threatening or aggressive behaviour.

Ex-rugby international Halvey sentenced

Former Irish rugby international Eddie Halvey has received a seven-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to careless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. Halvey was also disqualified from driving for seven years. The charges relate to an accident causing the death of 16-year-old Kevin Walsh at Coole, outside Toomevara, in Co Tipperary on 1 April 2006. Halvey had previously been charged with dangerous driving causing death. A sitting of the Circuit Court in Nenagh heard that forensic difficulties had emerged in the case and the DPP had accepted the lesser charge of careless driving.
